The River : A Journey to the Source of HIV and AIDS

by Edward Hooper, W. D. Hamilton

In this hefty volume, Hooper, a journalist and author, puts forward a startling theory about the origin of HIV and AIDS. Based on over 600 interviews and more than 4,000 written sources, his research suggests that HIV may have been spread to humans, not from the "natural" result of human/chimp encounters as previously believed, but rather from medical experiments done in Africa in the 1950s with an oral polio vaccine which may have been manufactured from chimpanzee kidneys.

It is full of astonishing and interesting facts not only about viruses but about the humans studying them.
